In Conversation with Abstract Painting: Studio Diary - June 2025

Art by its very nature is a collaborative experience between the artist and the audience. The artist makes the painting with an intention (generally, but not always) that other people should see it at some point and that the work be shared with others.

In Search of Resonance in the Strangeland Series: Creative Explorations in Paint, Collage and Print
The Strangeland Series captures the essence of artistic exploration through the abstract painting process. Each piece uniquely combines vibrant colors, dynamic shapes, and intriguing textures to reflect a journey into abstraction and a dreamlike sense of place. Monochromatic Sketches Inspire Emotive Colourful Landscapes in the Wayfinder Series.
This body of work saw me return to my monochrome sketchbook drawings of plants and foliage for fresh inspiration. My aim was to re-interpret these black and white mixed media drawings and transform them into new references to the natural world in my abstract landscape work. Adding another dimension to the aesthetic of my paintings in the form of organic shapes was made possible by revisiting prints, drawings and paintings of tangled undergrowth, trees, ponds and water plants

Painting the In-Between: Reflections on Emotional Terrain in the landscapes of the Latent Series
This series began with the concept of allowing the latent qualities of my mixed media working process to surface and manifest in ways that are ultimately guided by the diversity of momentary action and thought.
Reflecting on recent work, in particular my Portal Series and The Boardwalk, I also wanted to revisit elements of the visual language that developed during the making of this past work, including verticals, horizontals and organic shapes.

Abstractions Inspired by Spirit of Place: The River House Commission
The River House Commission was created in response to a unique setting—a home perched above the Noosa River, where water, light, and shifting reflections define the atmosphere of place. Each painting was conceived to echo the rhythms of the river, the riverbanks, and the passing watercraft. They offer a dialogue between the different energies of the river and the home itself.
