Colour is an essential element of design that can significantly affect both the aesthetics and emotions evoked by a work. While many artists often work with an array of colours, the use of limited colour palettes is a powerful way to harness the visual impact of fewer hues. Let's explore the concept and look at a few practical ways to help you choose a limited colour palette.

'Triad' sounds other-worldy, like something from a scif-i movie, but whilst these colour harmonies can be challenging to work with, they're not that scary! Continuing with my colour exercises and using my colour wheel for reference, I've been exploring options for 'triads'.

Who doesn't love colour?! I'm definitely a 'saturated colour girl' and sometimes I'm tempted to have every colour under the sun on the palette....think 'kid in a candy store'.

The short answer is that a monotype is always completely unique and a monoprint can be one of a series of prints taken from the same plate. Let's take a closer look...... The terms 'monoprint' and 'monotype', are often used interchangeably. But the difference is in the processes used to create them.....

Working with monochromatic colour, doesn't just mean using black and white - far from it! As I look back at my paintings over the years, I can see I've quite often favoured an essentially monochrome palette in many of my pieces, but I've usually added a touch of other colours. There's a subtlety and depth that can be achieved in using a restricted palette which for me, allows the shapes and lines to have a stronger visual conversation...

If you've been following my Instagram you'll know I've been taking a bit of a deep dive into colour recently. I am a self confessed colour addict and it's always been a fundamental part of my visual language. But more often than not, I've worked with it intuitively or subconsciously rather than intentionally and consciously. I was interested to test my knowledge and understanding and see where making more conscious decisions about colour choices might take me.
