Making Mini Abstract Paintings - Work in Progress

I've been having a tidy up in the studio in preparation for Noosa Open Studios (6th - 15th October) and came across a couple of 10 cm x 10 cm little canvases, which are perfect for making mini abstract paintings!

2 small abstract design mixed media paintings next to an artists palette with paint

I can't think now when or why I started them, but they obviously got left behind and subsequently buried in the general creative chaos of the studio and became buried.

And since tidying up is my least favourite activity in the world, when there's creativity to be had, I stopped to have a play around with them and see if I could take them on a new miniature journey......

It felt like quite a challenge to shift from working on a 100 cm x 80 cm painting to something so small, but it's good for stretching the old grey matter and I don't often make mini abstract paintings, much as I love them!

I rarely throw anything away, so I had plenty of tiny snippets of gelli prints and off cuts from larger work so it was really just a question of puzzling my way through one tub after another to find pieces that would work well together in a composition. I started with some paint but that gave way to mostly collage in the end. I let go of formal colour explorations and just used whatever was to hand, so they've ended up quite multi-coloured - which is a new little tangent for me.

These little originals will be ready in time for Noosa Open Studios 6th - 15th October, I look forward to welcoming you into the studio to talk all things art!
