Coastal Inspiration - Artwork Spotlight

Individual paintings don't exist in isolation. There were paintings that came before and new paintings that will come after. Each new original artwork is part of this continuum of creative thought and energy.

A sandy path leads to a beach with a cloudy sky and ocean waves. Two people walk along the shore. Greenery frames the scene.

I love to look back at threads that I might have put down some time ago and now feel ready to revisit or pick up again. With the artwork I'm creating at the moment and being out in nature gathering visual information in my sketchbook as I contemplate the notion of crossing a threshold of some kind, I'm feeling reconnected to several paintings in particular:

The Boardwalk

 Tidal Pool

Through The Swale

All these pieces reflect my experiences of being in and passing through different parts of my local coastal environment. These environments offer me physical space, a place to connect with and understand my emotional state and where I feel the freedom to think clearly and often differently.

The Boardwalk was a large mixed media work in muted earthy colours inspired by walking a local beach access track at South Peregian - North Coolum.

The sense of crossing a threshold is very strong in this piece.

The vegetation along the track is so varied and the birdsong distinct; you could be a million miles from anywhere, it's really like stepping into another world.

A colorful abstract painting with leaves hangs above a wooden bench. A yellow blanket, basket, and stacked books create a cozy setting.
Text titled "The Boardwalk" overlays a textured, abstract background with soft blues and yellows, describing a scenic walk through nature.

Abstract painting with blue, green, and yellow hues on a white wall above a wooden cabinet. A modern lamp and stacked books nearby.

I walk on the beach most days - and in all weathers (mostly!)

It's the one environment I don't think I'll ever never tire of, as it's so different each and every day, depending on the mood of mother nature. The light is constantly changing, the sea takes on a different character depending on the tide and the winds, and the sand can offer up countless treasures one day and nothing but jellyfish the next!

Most special of all are the sunny days with a gentle offshore breeze, where the sea is calm and sparkling blue, and the ebbing tide has left saltwater swimming pools in the sand, warmed by the sun. They're perfect places to pause, and absorb the sensory experience of sand, sea and sun.

My connection to nature feels utterly complete on these days.

Modern bedroom with gray bedding, white walls, and a vibrant abstract painting in blue and yellow above the bed. Minimalist decor.
Text titled "Tidal Pool" describes inspiration from sea encounters, emphasizing surprise, joy, and connection to nature. Background is abstract.
Framed abstract art with blue and yellow patterns hangs over a woven cabinet. Cotton stems in a vase are beside a book and cup. Minimalist vibe.

The transitional crossing of the swale to get to the beach is for me symbolic of the energy shift I feel walking along the beach access track; it's as if I'm stepping through a special gateway to reach the nourishing life force that is the ocean.

The track at Beach Access No.47 at Marcus Beach was the inspiration for my Portal Series (2023), where I explored different ways of representing elements of the environment and that feeling of both physical and emotional transition.

Abstract art with green, blue, and yellow hues hangs above a table with vases and stacked books against a neutral wall.

Text reads: "‘Through the Swale’ - A painting capturing the sandy track at Marcus Beach. Themes of movement, anticipation, and transition."
Modern bedroom with a gray bed, white linens, and pillows. Abstract painting with green, blue, and yellow shapes hangs above. Minimalist decor.
