Dreams, Drifting & Journeys of the Mind - Artwork Spotlight

The mind works differently at the edges of consciousness, in that in-between space where half-remembered images, thoughts that dissolve before they can be named, and the fringes of a dream exist only briefly, but long enough to leave something behind.
It's a state I return to again and again in the studio. Not one I consciously conjure, but one I notice when it arrives; when a composition starts to feel more like a landscape glimpsed through rain than one seen clearly, or when the marks I'm making seem to come from somewhere beyond direct intention. When my mind is elsewhere but my hands are still making the work.

These artworks aren't connected by a colour palette or even by series (they come from different bodies of work, made at different times) but they share something. A quality of searching. Of transience. Of not quite knowing where a thought begins or ends.

Sleep of the Dreamer began not with an image in mind but with a feeling, that particular quality of moving through rather than arriving at. The portals you see in this piece aren't destinations; they're openings, thresholds that suggest passage without promising resolution.
I often find myself working in this in-between space, and this painting perhaps holds it more than most. I wanted it to resist clarity, to stay suspended, the way a dream does in those first seconds after waking before it begins to dissolve.
If you've ever woken from a dream that felt more real than waking life, you'll recognise the ambiguity this piece is describing. It isn't asking to be understood. It's asking to be felt.

Where Sleep of the Dreamer feels still and suspended, Dream Machine hums.
There's a momentum to this piece that feels less like rest and more like propulsion - something working underneath the surface, purposeful beneath the apparent visual chaos.
I've long been drawn to the generative quality of the subconscious. The way it quietly processes and recombines while we sleep, while we're not looking, producing something we couldn't have arrived at through logic alone.
The title came from that feeling. Not a machine in any cold or industrial sense, but in the sense of something quietly, persistently at work.

Spirits of the Meadow moves the dream outward into landscape, into myth, into something that feels older than memory.
I have embodied memories of visiting stone circles in England and Ireland, of standing in those places and feeling the potential for energy to shift. This piece carries that feeling. of enchanted energy, that wasn't planned, it emerged as the work developed, as though the painting took on a vibration of its own.
This piece reminds me that dreaming isn't only what we do at night. It's the mode the imagination operates in during daylight hours, when we allow our consciousness to loosen its grip just enough to let older memories and buried sentiments slip through into the present.
