'Receiving the Dream' belongs to a vision that has followed me since childhood, a landscape I return to in sleep, again and again, unchanged by all the years between. In it, a dog is running across a moonlit hillside, at the edge of a stand of trees. And though it doesn't appear in the painting, it is a strong symbolic element in the dream. I began having this dream when I lived in the Yorkshire Dales, and I still have it now, decades and an entire hemisphere away, which makes me wonder if it's really about the imagery of the hillside at all, but perhaps an undercurrent of sentiment; continuity perhaps, or a search for it. I'm honestly not sure. Layers of blue settle beneath the yellow field barns, and tall mangrove trees rise through the scene, their motif repeated once more in vivid red, as if to hold onto how vivid the vision still feels, even now, even after all this time. Some dreams don't ask to be understood. They only ask to be received.
