'Under a Different Sky' references the joy of finding oneself somewhere unexpected and wholly belonging. The ground connects across hemispheres to the same earth left behind, instilling the same deep instinct for connection to landscape - and yet the sky above tells an entirely different story. Where northern light is low and often heavy with grey, the light of the Sunshine Coast is expansive, high and radiant, flooding the landscape with a warmth and luminosity that changes everything it touches. Banksias from the landscape surrounding the Peregian Beach studio root the work firmly in the present - in the place arrived at, grown into, and become fluent with. The raindrop motifs fall freely, symbolising immersion in the transition between one life and another, between the landscape carried in memory and the one unfolding daily beneath an entirely new and generous sky.
Part of the Threshold Series - a body of work exploring the dual landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and the Sunshine Coast, and what it means to be shaped by both. Read more about the series in the blog.
