'Before I Belong' sits in a landscape that feels both inhabited and not yet fully claimed. Yorkshire hills roll through the background in quiet layers, dotted with the familiar motifs of rural life, while the dark sculptural branches of a Round Leafed Mallee eucalypt possess the foreground, bridging two worlds not yet reconciled. The raindrops fall sparsely through the composition - showing the first stirrings of transition, but not yet in full flow. This is a landscape of arrival, painted from the threshold, looking out from the new world at the receding landscape.
