Studio Diary - June 2025

Updated: 4 days ago

I've been thinking a lot about the role of the creator and the role of the viewer, in the creative process and how they are intrinsically intertwined, much like dance partners.....Salsa, Waltz, Disco.... take your pick!

Art by its very nature is a collaborative experience between the artist and the audience. The artist makes the painting with an intention (generally, but not always) that other people should see it at some point and that the work be shared with others.

Some artists are very intentional about the messaging within their work, even using words within a painting to make their point, whilst others offer more gentle reflections and responses to the world around them.

But however the artist choses to engage their audience, through still life, landscape or portraiture perhaps, there is a common thread between all artists and those who look upon their work; a desire to forge a connection that transcends material possessions and journeys into the realm of emotion and interpretation.

Art is a beautiful dance between the creator and the viewer. It's not just about the physical piece, but the emotions it stirs, the thoughts it provokes, and the connections it fosters. It's like a silent conversation that can speak volumes. The creator pours their heart and soul into their work, and the viewer, or collector, interprets it through their own unique lens. It's a truly magical experience.

In reflecting on the final painting in my Strangeland Series I have been thinking a lot about the lengthy journey this painting has been on and the months-long conversation I've been having with it. It's been out in the studio, then put away again and then back out, only to be covered up and ignored for a while (I think that's the way it goes for me with big pieces).

This painting is to me an open-ended question, I'm not sure if the conclusion we reached was the only one that could have been, but it's a conclusion none the less! I find when I look at it, that every corner of it sparks a curiosity within me as to how it came to be. It really is as if it's been created in dream-like state, hence the painting title.

(And in case you're wondering - I'm a disco girl.....)

Abstract patchwork design with geometric patterns in blue, pink, and orange hues. "SLIVERS" and "Studio One Noosa" text overlay.

With the 'Slivers' exhibition wrapping up next week I've taken a closer look at creative expression through barcode art and how it became a 'thing'.

Colorful abstract painting with geometric shapes and patterns in pink, blue, and yellow. Circles, stripes, and dots create a dynamic scene.

With work coming and going to galleries lately I've been thinking about this a lot! My latest Blog post dives a little deeper into things to think about if you're considering taking the plunge and welcoming a new piece of art into your home. Buying art is a meaningful and enriching way to make your space truly your own. It isn't just about decoration; it's about expressing your unique personality and style.

| Studio Notes

The studio never sleeps and I've got a few new projects on the go - seemingly random and unrelated, but they're all ideas I felt I needed to realise in some way! Here's just a snapshot of some new printing experiments (blog post coming soon) and pottery pieces, under glazed and ready for firing (I'm thinking about Open Studios in October already....) I'll keep you posted!

| Final Thoughts

Let the beauty and emotions evoked by abstract art inspire you to find your own creative voice. By nurturing our own creativity, we can cultivate a deeper connection to the art that moves us, and to the world around us.

And with that, I'm back to the studio.....to go in several different directions at once, with maybe a bit of disco music in the background!

Black cursive handwriting spelling "Charlotte" on a white background. The text is bold and smooth, conveying a casual and personal feel.
