As this painting unfolded, I became lost in reverie about a secret garden that existed below my grandparents’ house which was built on the side of a hill. Access was by a narrow path tangled with overgrown and rambling plants. An enormous rock outcrop concealed the garden from above and to happen upon it was to arrive in a hidden and enchanted place that appeared to long keep secrets of its own. Mosses, lichens and shade loving ferns created a soft and acoustically comforting atmosphere of quiet enchantment; the perfect place to hideaway.
