About this eBook

Gelli printing is an invitation to explore.

It’s a process that rewards curiosity, encourages experimentation, and often leads you somewhere unexpected.

In my own mixed media practice, gelli prints make a visually rich contribution, adding depth to layers, textures that simply couldn't be painted in a traditional way and they introduce elements of creative risk and surprise, lending a special energy to finished paintings.

With a little knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and by mastering a few simple techniques you can enjoy this simple and playful printmaking process, creating unique and beautiful prints at home.

This book is a step-by-step guide to getting started today!

What is Collage?

Gelli printing is a simple table top monotype printing process that enables you to create beautiful printed imagery without needing to access a traditional printmaking press, or work with oil based inks and expensive cold or hot pressed printmaking paper.

Using 4 basic tools - a gelli plate, a brayer (or roller), paper and water based paints, you can create unique, diverse and colourful prints in just a few minutes.

The only space requirement is to have a stable surface on which to place your plate and somewhere to dry all the many prints that you'll create once you get started!

Foundations for the Future

My approach to teaching Gelli printing is process-led and exploratory, with a focus on developing a few basic skills and techniques which can then be used to develop a personal visual language rather than following rigid sequences for predictable outcomes.

This eBook is about giving you a foundation knowledge of the basics,  in relation to your tools, options for materials, paint behaviour and introducing pattern and design through the use of stencils and masks which you can take forward as your preferences and printmaking style emerges and develops.
