Collage begins with noticing a torn edge, an unexpected colour, a surface that feels beautifully tactile.

In my own studio practice, collage is often the place where ideas take shape before they become paintings. It's where I test composition, play with colour relationships, and make connections between texture and form, before I turn to paint.
I wrote this guide because I wished I'd had it when I started with collage. Something clear, practical, and grounded in real studio experience. Not just inspiration, but the actual knowledge you need to make work you're proud of, and that will stand the test of time.

Collage is the art of building an image by arranging and layering different materials onto a surface using papers, painted pages, photographs, found objects, fabric, text, tissue, and hand-drawn elements, all combined to create something new, expressive, and entirely your own.
Using just a handful of simple materials (a stable surface, scissors or a blade, adhesive, and a collection of papers) you can begin creating layered compositions that explore shape, colour, texture, contrast, and visual storytelling.
Collage can be planned and deliberate, or completely intuitive and playful, making it an accessible process for absolute beginners and experienced artists alike.
One of the great joys of collage is how little setup you need. A table, a few materials to experiment with, and some time to arrange, rearrange and discover is genuinely all you need to begin. From there the process opens up naturally; gathering, shuffling pieces, stepping back and taking in the composition, and finding connections you didn't expect.

That means starting with the essentials: substrates, adhesives, papers and how they behave together. Get these right and everything else opens up. Get them wrong and even a beautiful composition can fail over time.
From that foundation, this guide encourages you to develop your own visual language, explore your own instincts for colour, texture, composition and material rather than following rigid rules toward predetermined outcomes.
