Wayfinder Series by Charlotte Wensley

Wayfinder Series

This body of work has seen me return to my monochrome sketchbook drawings of plants and foliage in order to revisit captured shapes and forms. My aim was to incorporate further references to the natural world into my abstract landscape work to soften the aesthetic and add another dimension to my paintings. I experimented with new printmaking techniques and began to explore the possibilities of using impressions taken from my photographs in the early layers of the work, to enhance the sense of place, and my connection to the environment. Much of this textured print work is no longer visible in the final image, but it has guided the making of each work.

The symbolism of the visual elements in these paintings has become stronger and more embedded as the series has progressed. The trees have come to represent my search for personal truth and understanding of self, the scattered leaves speak to transience and fragility and the vessel shapes, my family as they journey with me through memories of landscape.
